Breast Lift / Reduction

Breast Lift / Reduction

The natural effects of gravity, skin elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding are common factors which determine the shape and firmness of breasts. Breast lift and breast reduction procedures can help raise and reshape sagging or misshapen breasts. Depending on your aesthetic goals, a breast lift can be performed with or without a breast augmentation that includes implants.

Procedure

When considering the surgery, it’s important to review your health history. Your surgeon will want to know about any family history of breast cancer and results of previous mammograms or biopsies. If determined necessary, you may be asked to receive a mammogram before being able to proceed with the procedure. The surgeon will examine your breasts and may take photos and measurements of the size and position of your breasts, nipples, and areolas.

During the operation, general anesthesia is administered to make you more comfortable. Your surgeon will begin by making incisions, followed by the reshaping and repositioning of the breast tissue. After excising excess skin, the areola can also be reduced. The remaining skin is then tightened and the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. The sutures are layered within the tissue, along with skin adhesives and surgical tape to help support and heal the skin. Dressings will be placed on your breast and covered by a surgical bra.

There is a recovery area where patients are monitored by surgical staff after surgery, and then permitted to go home within a few hours. Before surgery, you’ll be asked to arrange for transportation that can bring you home once the operation is complete. You’ll also be asked to plan for someone to stay with you for at least 24 hours afterwards. Follow-ups will be scheduled to track your recovery progress. Most patients can return to non-strenuous work after 10 days. Strenuous work or exercise should not be resumed until 5 to 6 weeks after the procedure.
